The Prairie Pothole Region in the northern Great Plains is nicknamed "North America's Duck Factory." The region is a premier waterfowl breeding ground, attracting a large number of hunters, and it is a major contributor to hunting opportunities across the continent. An estimated 10,000 jobs and $760 million in labor income is generated in the region due to hunting and wildlife viewing.
The Prairie Pothole Region is also experiencing negative impacts from climate change, including increasing temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns. A new Deep Dive published by the National Climate Adaptation Science Center explores how climate adaptation scientists are providing the expertise and research needed to maintain the recreational and economic benefits of this region.
