Changing climate conditions can cause mismatches between species’ needs and their historic habitats. When this happens, resource managers may consider managed relocation as an adaptation strategy — moving vulnerable species to new, potentially better-suited habitats. Managed relocation is one of the few new, climate-specific strategies that have been developed, and demonstrates the type of innovation needed to respond effectively to climate change. While it has gained attention in recent years, managed relocation has not yet seen widespread implementation.
Join the Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center for a virtual discussion on April 14 from 2:30–4:00pm CT. A panel of experts will explore risks, opportunities and key considerations for operationalizing managed relocation from both theoretical and on-the-ground perspectives. They will also discuss how the idea of managed relocation came about — and how we might learn from it to develop other innovative adaptation strategies.
Featured speakers:
- Jessica Hellmann, Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center, University of Minnesota (Moderator)
- Joshua J. Lawler, University of Washington
- Robert Fisher, USGS Western Ecological Research Center
- Aviv Karasov-Olson, Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies
