June Science Seminar: Adapting Diverse Inland Fisheries in a Changing Climate

Date and Time
June 26, 2023, 12:00 pm CDT

Event Type: Science Seminar
Location: Virtual

Registration

Event Details:

Please join a discussion with a panel of U.S. Geological Survey fish researchers with work spanning Midwest, Great Lakes, and national boundaries aimed at supporting ecologically, culturally, and economically important fisheries. All panelists work with a variety of partners to address areas of management concern and develop adaptation strategies.

The panel will discuss ongoing projects as well as broader questions in the field of inland fish climate adaptation.

Panelists:

Bo Bunnell

David "Bo" Bunnell, Research Fishery Biologist
USGS Great Lakes Science Center

Bo is a Research Fishery Biologist at the Great Lakes Science Center, and Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan. Bo is the Principal Investigator (PI) for multiple projects that study community and ecosystem-level processes within the Great Lakes and at the global scale. In short, Bo’s research seeks to understand the ecological factors (e.g., resources, climate, predation) that can explain or predict fish biomass, consistent with an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries science and management.

Abby Lynch

Abigail Lynch, Research Fish Biologist
USGS National Climate Adaptation Science Center

Abigail (Abby) J. Lynch is a Research Fish Biologist with the USGS National Climate Adaptation Science Center. Abby conducts science and science syntheses on the impacts of global change to inland fishes at local, national, and global scales. Her work aims to inform conservation and sustainable use and to help fishers, managers, and other practitioners adapt to change.

Lyndsie Wszola

Lyndsie Wszola, Postdoctoral Researcher
University of Missouri

Lyndsie Wszola is a post-doctoral researcher at the Missouri Cooperative Research Unit and the University of Missouri. Her work uses fisheries and climate data to develop adaptation strategies for warming lakes, rivers, and streams.

Holly Embke

Facilitator: Holly Embke, Research Fish Biologist
USGS Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center

Holly Embke is a Research Fish Biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center. Holly’s research aims to understand conditions to support self-sustaining inland fish communities in a changing climate across a range of scales. Her work is collaborative and seeks to inform the conservation of inland fishes by working directly with partners to address areas of management concern and develop adaptation strategies.
