From Scared to Prepared: Sharing Your Science With the Media

Lunch and skills-building exercise for MW CASC-affiliated graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Facilitated by Tori Espensen of SciLine. Separate RSVP required.

Scientists have a responsibility to ensure that their findings get into the hands of people who can use them to make decisions, whether at large-scale policy levels or small choices in their daily lives. One way to do that is by speaking with media, but scientists often feel intimidated by that prospect. This session for early-career scientists will highlight the importance of speaking with media as one way of sharing scientific evidence with the general public and will take you step-by-step through the process of preparing for an interview. Through presentation, discussion, and an interactive exercise, you’ll learn tools that can help you feel more confident speaking with journalists and the general public more broadly.

2:00pm - 3:00pm

Breakout Sessions

  1. Improving Climate-informed Restoration
Ecological restoration is increasingly relied upon to achieve ambitious conservation objectives. Yet, climate change has created new uncertainties for pursuing restoration. This session will consider how research can help inform new approaches to climate resilient ecological restoration.

Moderator: Al Steinman, Grand Valley State University

Panelists: Christopher May, GEI Consultants; Sue Galatowitsch, University of Minnesota; and Rob Croll, Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission

  2. Let's Talk About Maladaptation
The goal of this discussion-based session is to build a shared understanding of maladaptation for natural and cultural resource managers in the Midwest.

Session leads: Amy Waananen, University of Minnesota; Diele Lobo, University of Minnesota; Patrick Hancock, University of Minnesota; and Sam Reed, University of Minnesota.

  3. Developing and Sustaining Adaptation Partnerships
This session will provide participants with a foundation and best practices to build and grow meaningful partnerships in climate adaptation science.

Moderators: Olivia LeDee and Desi Robertson

Panelists: Brad Potter, Upper Midwest and Great Lakes Landscape Conservation Cooperative; Kurt Kowalski, Great Lakes Science Center; and Nick Haddad, Michigan State University
