The Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center is helping build the next generation of climate adaptation scientists by offering undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers hands-on experience in research production and community engagement, training opportunities, and mentorship.
Our November Science Seminar will feature research presentations from Gigi Voss, an affiliated graduate student at the University of Minnesota, and Ayla Skorupa, an affiliated postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Join us to learn about Ayla and Gigi's work and ask questions about what they've learned.
Speakers
Gigi Voss Gigi (she/her) is a 4th year PhD student at the University of Minnesota in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department. She is a member of the collaborative project entitled First we must consider Manoomin/Psiŋ/Wild Rice which focuses on centering Tribal Nation's questions around wild rice. Her work focuses on using hydrologic modeling and data analysis to understand how climate and landscape changes impact Wild Rice waters. As part of this work, she is investigating the relationships between winter snow, spring hydrology, and Wild Rice abundance. |
Ayla Skorupa Ayla's work in applied aquatic conservation spans multiple research disciplines, from developing decision frameworks that link science and management, to understanding species ecological needs that govern their persistence. She specializes in field biology, quantitative ecology, and has extensive aquaculture experience. While she has a broad background her degrees are malacology focused, she earned a MSc. studying planktonic mollusks and a PhD researching freshwater mussel conservation. |
